Spring has certainly delivered the goods this year, and so have our recent WoTL Crop Walks across the Cummins district, Pinnaroo district and the Hart Field Days.
Over the past week, women connected to agriculture stepped away from their usual routines to spend time in paddocks, trial sites and field day conversations, sharing knowledge, asking questions and making the most of crops that are looking particularly promising this season.
In Pinnaroo, participants joined respected agronomist Jeff Braun for a morning of crop inspections, practical discussions and plenty of shared learning. As one participant put it, “Jeff is the best, a great advocate for women in the industry.” Another described the morning as “very wholesome and informative”, while others appreciated the opportunity to learn in a supportive environment where they felt comfortable asking questions.
Each crop walk attracted women from a range of agricultural backgrounds, from experienced broadacre farmers to those newer to the industry. This was the first year that our Lower Eyre Peninsula WoTL group joined the Air EP Crop Walk day, challenging our scientific brains with research results, and bringing lots of fun on the tour bus. Learning about crop health, different varieties, trial results and management practices sparked plenty of discussion across each group, with attendees noting very interesting results relating to fungicide resistance, unique to their area.
At Hart Field Days, women enjoyed a “choose your own adventure” style experience, taking in research presentations, industry discussions and the latest innovations while connecting with other women from across the region. Participants particularly valued being exposed to current research, networking with others and attending a premium industry event alongside fellow farming women.
Across all three events, one theme stood out: the value of learning alongside other women. Whether discussing lentils in the paddock, exploring trial results, hearing from industry experts or simply catching up over a coffee, the combination of practical knowledge and genuine connection continues to make these events so worthwhile.
As one Pinnaroo participant summed it up, the day provided “networking, learning from each other” and left her “inspired to have good conversations”.
